The Passing of The Apron

Today, while helping grandmother organize things in her bedroom I came upon a box of things she didn't know what to do with.  Inside the box was an old apron I remember her wearing when I was just a child.  She wore it whenever she would cook or clean in her kitchen.

Its funny how the mind works.  All I needed to do was look at the fabric and I instantly knew what it was.  And then, when I held it up to get a better look at it I remembered the smells of her cooking and the sounds of delicious home-made tomato sauce boiling in one of her pots.  I remembered how she would make home-made tortillas and how wonderful they tasted.  But most of all, I remembered the love she showed while wearing that apron.

Grandma saw me staring at it and she smiled and told me to try it on.  So I did.  And it fit.  I looked at her and then at my mother and they both smiled approvingly.

" Grandma, if you don't need this apron anymore, may I have it?"  I asked her, feeling a little self-conscious.

" Go ahead, hun.  Sure you can have it!"

And just like that, grandma's apron is now mine.  And somehow I feel like some sort of torch has been passed on to me.  I'm not as great a cook as grandma was, and still can be.  But I can keep trying to be the best cook I can be.

And if my memory serves me right, then all that really matters is that I have the right attitude: the attitude of a servant, the attitude of love.

"Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;  His love endures forever." ~ Psalm 107:1

Thank you Lord, for such an amazing grandmother and the good example she has been to me all my life.  And thanks too for the apron!  I will put it to good use. :)

Thanks for your beautiful post on my blog. That is so nice that you now have the apron. I am asking God for the attitude of a servant and love, too. Your meals will be lovely since they are made from so much love. :)
Blessings,
Tammy

Tammy: Thank you. :) Having the attitude of a servant can be really tough sometimes but God gave us the greatest example of all in Jesus Christ.

I'm amazed how God works for the same goodness in all His children. Loving and serving. Only He can accomplish this in our lives.

Thank you for your thoughts and blessings to you too. :)

Fascinating. I was just studying Matthew 20:26-28 "Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

I am sure you will put the apron to great use.

Calvin: Thank you for the encouragement. Those verses in Matthew are very powerful. Being a servant is so important to the Lord.

Its funny how sometimes the idea can seem so unimportant to people. I'm glad that God makes a big deal about it.
