The Afterlife of Hair

Yesterday I decided to cut my hair.  It was a thought I had been entertaining for several weeks but had no extra time to have it done.  But this week it all worked out.  I had not cut my hair for about a year and a half so it was reaching down to my waist.

I love long hair.  Especially when its healthy.  But long hair takes time to care for and it can be very heavy when wet.  And, as some of you readers already know, I have been preparing to lead a mission team to Spain next week.  Reviewing our schedule I knew there would not be much time to deal with my long hair.  So after thinking and praying I decided to see what my options were.  And while searching for the best prices in various hair salons in my town I learned about Locks of Love.

It is a fabulous non-profit organization that creates wigs for children who have lost their hair. Most of the time this is due to illness but sometimes it can be genetic too.  On their website they give instructions on how donated hair is used.  At least 10 inches is needed and preferably in a ponytail or braid.

Well that just made my day!  So I asked my mother to take a photo of my hair before and after as a way of commemorating the event.  At the salon my hair was measured and pulled back.  And before I knew it my neck and head felt a weight lift off... literally.  I was shone a beautiful, thick pony tail of my own hair!  It was more than 10 inches.  I lost 14 inches!  Oo-la-la!

My mother was sad they cut off so much.  My grandmother said my hair looks ugly short but I am beaming.  God gave me healthy, long hair and I enjoyed it while I had it.  Now, somewhere someone who really needs encouragement will find joy with it too.  My hair has passed on and if hair could have an afterlife I believe it would be happy knowing it is going to help someone in need. And I am already looking forward to when I can do it again! :D

I don't have a lot of money to give but I ask God to show me ways that I can help others and this was one way I could help.  How about you?  What are ways you can help others with what you already have?  Seek God's advice and you might be surprised at which doors open.

" Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.  And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work."  2 Corinthians 9: 7-8

Dear Sister,
What a wonderful love-filled thing that you did. Have a great mission trip to Spain too.

I have two friends who have given their once long hair to this exact same group - I think this is so cool! I'm sure you do NOT look ugly at all - can't family be so funny sometimes?! Looking forward to reading about your adventures, and how God blesses others through you, in Spain.
