Merry Christmas

It isn't the gifts, or the music, or the food that is most important on Christmas.  The world has turned it into a commercialized extravaganza and lifted up an idol, named Santa Claus, to distract from the true reason Christmas even exists.  The birth of Jesus Christ is Christmas.

Something interesting to note is the fact that no one really knows exactly when he was born.  It seems that research points to a different time of year all together, since the census ordered by king Herod would have taken place in a season that was easier for traveling.  Jesus might have been born in summer or spring!  *sigh*  It is so fascinating to study the Bible and see how history compliments its words.

Anyway, I think it is a true miracle that Christmas has survived so many centuries and that the story of Jesus Christ continues to be told time and time again.  The very first Christmas, the year Jesus was born, was not a happy one.  King Herod, also known as " Herod the Great,"  is considered by most historians a madman.  When the magi did not return to tell him they had found Jesus, he ordered all boys under the age of two to be slaughtered.  Herod feared losing his power to another who might take his place as king.  He knew the ancient scriptures and did not wish for them to come true.

Joseph and Mary were warned by an angel that Herod wanted Jesus dead.  So they fled to Egypt and stayed there until king Herod finally died.  But just imagine the horror and the sorrow of all the families who lost their young sons on that first Christmas.  Our salvation came with a high price.  It started from the very first day Jesus entered the world to the moment he gave up his life on the cross.

Let's not forget the true meaning of Christmas.  Jesus came into the world to save us.  Those of us who say we are Christians must reflect his love.  So, this year if you know someone who is struggling... help them.  Let people associate encouragement, genuine care, and sincerity when they think of you.  And in so doing you will bring glory to God.

None of us can change the world but we shouldn't let that trouble us.  It is a task that is too great for any of us to bear.  Leave that to the Lord.  All he asks is that we remember him and share all the goodness he has given to us with others.

Blessings and peace to each of you this Christmas and may the new year see God show himself in wondrous ways to everyone who believes in him.

Luke 2: 9-11 " And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. (10) And the angel said to them, ' Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people. (11) For unto you is born this day in the city of David a savior, who is Christ the Lord.'"
